BayWa r.e. Solar Energy Systems GmbH, in collaboration with SOCOMEC and Rheinland Solar GmbH, has deployed a 10 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at a logistics and cold storage facility in Mutterstadt, Germany, enabling greater utilization of on-site solar power and improving energy flexibility.
The project commenced in October 2025, with the delivery of two SOCOMEC SMARTSYS M5000 battery energy storage systems completed at the end of June 2026. The turnkey battery containers each provide 2.5 MW of power output and 5 MWh of energy storage capacity, forming the core of the 10 MWh energy storage installation.
The site already operates a 3 MWp photovoltaic (PV) system, configured as a zero-feed-in installation. Under this arrangement, surplus solar electricity generated during periods of low on-site demand was previously curtailed due to the inability to export excess power to the grid.
With the commissioning of the new battery storage system, excess solar generation can now be stored and utilized when demand increases. The integrated solution is expected to improve on-site solar self-consumption, reduce peak electricity loads, and enhance the reliability of power supply for the logistics and cold storage operations.

Solar Energy Systems GmbH, said battery energy storage systems are becoming increasingly important for companies seeking to maximize the value of self-generated solar electricity. She noted that the Mutterstadt project demonstrates how photovoltaic generation and battery storage can be combined to create a more efficient and flexible energy solution.
According to the companies, the installation also represents the deployment of SOCOMEC’s 500th energy storage system worldwide, marking a milestone for the company while highlighting its collaboration with BayWa r.e. Solar Energy Systems GmbH and Rheinland Solar GmbH on commercial and industrial energy storage projects.
