New Rooftop Solar Rules To Add 660 MW Of Annual Capacity From August 1 In Taiwan

The Ministry of the Interior will introduce new regulations on August 1 to accelerate rooftop solar deployment across the country by making solar photovoltaic (PV) systems mandatory for larger buildings. Under the new Standards for Installing Photovoltaic Power Systems on Buildings, all newly constructed, expanded, or renovated buildings with a floor area exceeding 1,000 square meters will be required to install rooftop solar systems. The government estimates that the regulation will add around 660 MW of new solar capacity every year.

The policy comes as electricity demand continues to rise due to the rapid growth of high-tech industries, particularly semiconductor manufacturing and artificial intelligence. According to the Sustainable Solar Development Association, the mandatory installation of rooftop solar systems will help provide clean electricity directly to these energy-intensive industries while improving energy security in urban areas.

The association also noted that rooftop solar generation will help businesses meet international sustainability requirements, including RE100 renewable energy commitments and the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). It added that similar building-integrated solar requirements have already been adopted in many countries, making the new regulation consistent with global clean energy practices.

The upcoming rules are also creating new business opportunities for domestic renewable energy companies. Major firms, including Sino-American Silicon Products, United Renewable Energy, Motech Industries, Gintech Energy, Alpha Solar, and Gintung Energy, are preparing to support the expected increase in demand for rooftop solar installations.

Sino-American Silicon Products said its subsidiary, Ever Energy, is expanding rooftop solar projects while increasing production of fire-resistant solar modules. Alpha Solar is supplying building-integrated photovoltaic products that serve as waterproof, fire-resistant, and walkable materials for rooftops and building walls. Motech Industries continues to manufacture specialized solar products, including solar floor panels, wall panels, roof tile modules, and colored glass solutions.

Gintung Energy emphasized the importance of long-term system performance through continuous monitoring and maintenance services. The company operates a 24-hour monitoring system and provides inspection, repair, and upgrade services for solar installations. Together, the new regulations and industry investments are expected to accelerate rooftop solar adoption and support the country’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy infrastructure.
