POWERGRID Invites Bids For 500 MW/1000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System Across India

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has invited nationwide bids for the development of a 500 MW / 1000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) under a Long Term Agreement (LTA). The project, categorized as Category-A (2-Hour BESS), is expected to play a significant role in strengthening India’s electricity grid, improving grid reliability, and supporting the growing share of renewable energy in the country’s power mix.

The tender covers the complete design, engineering, supply, erection, testing, and commissioning of the battery energy storage system on a site-destination basis across multiple locations in India. The project will be executed on a turnkey basis, with the selected bidder responsible for delivering the entire system from installation to commissioning.

POWERGRID is conducting the procurement through an open competitive bidding process under the Works category in the Power and Energy sector. The bidding process is being managed digitally through the company’s PRANIT e-tendering portal under RFX Number 5007000201 and Specification Reference Number CC/T/W-BESS/DOM/A04/26/09605.

According to the tender notice, there is no tender fee and no Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) required for participation, making it easier for eligible companies to compete. The notice states that details related to the Performance Bank Guarantee (PBG) and other contractual obligations will be governed by the standard conditions provided in the detailed tender documents available on the PRANIT portal.

The tender timeline began with the release of the bidding documents and the opening of bid submissions on July 16, 2026. A pre-bid meeting was held on July 28, 2026, allowing prospective bidders to seek clarifications regarding technical and commercial aspects of the project. The final date for document sale and electronic bid submission is August 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM, while bid opening is scheduled for 11:30 AM on the same day.

The proposed battery energy storage system will provide two hours of energy storage, enabling the grid to store excess electricity during periods of low demand and discharge it during peak consumption hours. Such systems help maintain grid frequency, reduce transmission congestion, improve power quality, and enhance the integration of variable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

As India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, large-scale battery storage projects are becoming increasingly important for ensuring reliable and flexible power system operations. The 500 MW / 1000 MWh BESS project represents another major step in building the country’s energy storage infrastructure and supporting the transition to a cleaner and more resilient electricity network.

The tender process is being overseen by Rohit Dalakoti, Chief Manager, POWERGRID, at the company’s corporate office in Gurugram, Haryana. Interested and eligible bidders have been advised to carefully review the qualification requirements and technical specifications before submitting their proposals through the PRANIT e-tendering portal before the August 17 deadline.
