Vikram Solar has inaugurated its 6 GW solar PV module manufacturing facility at Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, as part of the state government’s inauguration programme held in Chennai. The facility was virtually inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru C. Joseph Vijay.
The inauguration marks a major milestone in Vikram Solar’s manufacturing expansion and its plans to develop large-scale solar manufacturing infrastructure in India. The facility is located within a 186-acre greenfield campus and is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 800 skilled professionals in the region.
The Gangaikondan facility is among Vikram Solar’s advanced manufacturing plants and forms part of the company’s broader strategy to establish an integrated solar manufacturing ecosystem. The campus is planned to progressively expand beyond solar module manufacturing to include solar cell, wafer and ingot manufacturing, bringing multiple stages of the solar value chain under one location.
As part of its manufacturing roadmap, Vikram Solar plans to establish 9 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity by FY27, with further capacity expansion planned thereafter. The company said the expansion will support greater domestic value addition, strengthen supply-chain resilience and create long-term industrial and employment opportunities in Tamil Nadu.
The inauguration was attended by Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S. Keerthana, Chief Secretary Dr. M. Sai Kumar IAS, Additional Chief Secretary – Industries Dr. S. Vijayakumar IAS, TIDCO Principal Secretary and CMD Dr. D. Karthikeyan IAS, TNPL Chairman and Managing Director Kumar Jayant IAS, SIPCOT Managing Director S. A. Raman IAS, Guidance Tamil Nadu Managing Director and CEO Deepak Jacob IAS and other government officials.
Representing Vikram Solar at the inauguration was Sameer Nagpal, CEO of Vikram Solar Limited.
Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of Vikram Solar, said the company remains committed to Tamil Nadu and aims to leverage the state’s industrial ecosystem and skilled workforce to build a more self-reliant clean energy value chain in India.
The Gangaikondan project is expected to strengthen Vikram Solar’s domestic manufacturing capabilities while contributing to Tamil Nadu’s industrial development and India’s renewable energy ambitions.
