IEX Records Highest-Ever Monthly Electricity Trading Volume of 13,938 MU in August 2026

The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded its highest-ever monthly electricity trading volume of 13,938 million units (MU) in August 2026, marking a 20.2% year-on-year (YoY) increase, amid strong growth in electricity demand across India.

According to government data, India’s energy consumption reached 169.01 billion units (BUs) in August 2026, registering a 12.85% YoY increase. The rise in power demand led to a 61.7% YoY increase in buy bids in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM), contributing to higher market prices.

The average market clearing price in the Day-Ahead Market stood at ₹4.88 per unit during August 2026, up 22% YoY. Meanwhile, the average clearing price in the Real-Time Market (RTM) increased 30.4% YoY to ₹4.41 per unit.

Electricity Market Trading

The Day-Ahead Market, including the High Price Day-Ahead Market (HP-DAM), recorded a trading volume of 5,517 MU in August 2026, compared with 4,797 MU in August 2025, representing a 15% YoY increase.

The Real-Time Market also witnessed growth, with volumes rising to 5,565 MU from 5,029 MU a year earlier, an increase of 10.6% YoY.

The Day-Ahead Contingency and Term-Ahead Market (TAM), including HPTAM and comprising contingency, daily, weekly and monthly contracts of up to three months, recorded 1,765 MU in trading volume during August 2026. This was more than double the 835 MU traded in August 2025, registering a 111.3% YoY increase.

Green Market Volumes Rise 17.3%

IEX’s Green Market, comprising the Green Day-Ahead Market (G-DAM) and Green Term-Ahead Market, recorded 1,091 MU in August 2026, compared with 930 MU in the corresponding month last year, marking a 17.3% YoY increase.

The weighted average price in the Green Day-Ahead Market stood at ₹3.92 per unit in August 2026, representing a 5.1% YoY increase.

REC Trading Declines 86.6%

Trading activity in the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) Market declined during the month. A total of 2.91 lakh RECs were traded in August 2026, down 86.6% YoY, primarily due to lower participation.

REC trading sessions were conducted on August 12 and August 27, 2026. The clearing price stood at ₹370 per REC in the August 12 session and ₹350 per REC in the August 27 session.

The next REC trading sessions at IEX are scheduled for September 9 and September 30, 2026.

The August performance highlights continued growth in India’s electricity trading market, supported by rising power demand and increased participation across the Day-Ahead, Real-Time, Term-Ahead and Green Market segments.
