Windergy India 2026 to Spotlight India’s Growing Wind Manufacturing and Export Ambitions

India’s wind energy sector is increasingly emerging as both a clean-power and industrial export opportunity, with the country’s manufacturing capabilities, domestic deployment and global equipment exports expected to take centre stage at Windergy India 2026.

The eighth edition of the flagship wind energy platform, organised by the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) and PDA Ventures Pvt. Ltd., with support from the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), is scheduled to take place from October 7–9, 2026, at the Chennai Trade Centre.

India’s Wind Capacity Crosses 58 GW

The event comes at a time of strong momentum in India’s wind energy sector. The country added 6.05 GW of wind capacity during FY2025-26, its highest annual addition on record, taking cumulative installed capacity to 58.14 GW as of July 31, 2026.

The industry is targeting 100 GW of installed wind capacity by 2030 and 155 GW by 2035. Achieving the 2030 target would require annual additions of approximately 10 GW.

According to research cited by IWTMA, India currently has around 43 GW of wind capacity under construction, while the country’s assessed wind potential could reach approximately 1,164 GW at 150-metre hub heights.

Dinesh Jagdale, Hon. Secretary, IWTMA and President – Corporate Affairs & Retail Business at Suzlon Energy Ltd., said India’s wind industry has evolved from a nascent market into a sector with more than 58 GW of installed capacity and a manufacturing base capable of exporting turbines globally.

He highlighted collaboration between manufacturers, developers, policymakers and innovators as critical to achieving India’s 100 GW by 2030 and 155 GW by 2035 wind capacity ambitions.

Domestic Manufacturing and Exports Gain Momentum

Manufacturing is becoming an increasingly important component of India’s wind energy growth story. Domestic wind turbine manufacturing capacity has expanded to approximately 24 GW annually, compared with around 10 GW in 2014.

The sector currently achieves an estimated 70–80% domestic value addition, strengthening India’s position as a global wind equipment manufacturing hub.

Wind equipment exports crossed ₹12,000 crore in FY2025-26, representing an increase of nearly 50%, according to the industry data highlighted at the Windergy India 2026 curtain-raiser.

The MNRE has also introduced WT-MARUT, described as India’s first wind supply-chain portal, developed in collaboration with IWTMA. The initiative is aimed at strengthening supply-chain visibility and supporting the country’s ambitions to become a global wind equipment export hub.

Suman Nag, Executive Committee Member, IWTMA, Global Business Development at Envision Energy India Pvt. Ltd., said companies in the sector are continuing to scale manufacturing and exports from India while contributing to the country’s broader export ambitions.

Focus Shifts Towards Bankable Wind Projects

Beyond manufacturing and capacity expansion, project bankability, tariffs and transmission readiness are expected to be major areas of discussion at Windergy India 2026.

Industry stakeholders are increasingly emphasising that wind project viability depends not only on achieving the lowest discovered tariff but also on factors such as bankable power purchase agreements (PPAs), timely contracting, transmission infrastructure and appropriate bidding structures.

The sector is also moving beyond standalone wind projects towards wind-solar hybrids, storage-backed projects and Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) procurement models.

These developments are increasing the importance of wind power as a source of more reliable and system-oriented renewable energy as India works to integrate larger volumes of variable renewable generation.

Offshore Wind Emerges as a New Growth Frontier

Offshore wind is another major opportunity for India’s renewable energy sector.

A ₹7,453 crore Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme is supporting the development of India’s first 1 GW of offshore wind capacity, comprising 500 MW each off the coasts of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

India has an assessed offshore wind potential of nearly 71 GW across its two coasts. MNRE is also engaging with the World Bank and KPMG on additional measures to support offshore wind development and address tariff-related challenges.

Repowering Could Revive India’s Ageing Wind Fleet

The industry is also looking at repowering as a significant source of additional wind generation.

India has more than 19,000 sub-MW wind turbine generators (WTGs) located in high-wind zones. According to industry estimates, approximately 25.4 GW of repowering potential exists within the ageing fleet.

Replacing legacy turbines with modern machines could substantially improve utilisation levels, with capacity utilisation factors (CUF) potentially increasing from around 14–15% to approximately 30%.

The repowering opportunity could therefore allow India to extract significantly more generation from existing high-quality wind sites while making better use of established transmission and land infrastructure.

Windergy India 2026 to Bring Industry Stakeholders Together

Pradeep Devaiah, Chairman & CEO, PDA Ventures Pvt. Ltd., said Windergy India has evolved into a platform connecting stakeholders across the wind energy ecosystem.

He said the event would continue to provide a platform for the industry to connect, collaborate and support India’s wind capacity ambitions.

With domestic manufacturing expanding, exports accelerating, offshore wind gaining policy support and repowering offering additional capacity potential, Windergy India 2026 is expected to provide a key platform for discussions around the next phase of India’s wind energy growth and its emergence as a global wind manufacturing and export hub.
