Laguna Lake Floating Solar Project Advances With Nearly 923 MWp Capacity In Philippines

The Philippines Department of Energy (DOE) has joined the commitment ceremony for the Laguna Lake Floating Solar Power Project, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to expand renewable energy capacity and strengthen regional investment cooperation.

DOE Secretary Sharon S. Garin highlighted the importance of renewable energy projects in improving energy security, creating employment opportunities, and supporting communities. She said that every megawatt of clean energy contributes to building a more resilient and sustainable energy future for the Filipino people.

The project is being developed through a partnership between SunAsia Energy Inc. of the Philippines and Thailand-based Gunkul Engineering Public Company Limited. The collaboration represents another development in the growing economic and investment relationship between the Philippines and Thailand, while bringing together local and international expertise for renewable energy development.

The Laguna Lake Floating Solar Power Project will consist of seven floating solar facilities with a combined capacity of nearly 923 megawatts-peak (MWp). Once developed, the project is expected to make a significant contribution to the Philippines’ renewable energy expansion and demonstrate the potential of floating solar technology for large-scale clean power generation.

During the ceremony, Secretary Garin also emphasized that the development of renewable energy infrastructure must take into account the interests of communities surrounding Laguna Lake. She stressed the need to protect local livelihoods, maintain environmental stewardship, and ensure meaningful community participation throughout the project’s development.

The government considers responsible project development essential to ensuring that renewable energy investments generate benefits beyond electricity generation. Community engagement and environmental considerations are expected to remain important as the project progresses.

The floating solar development aligns with the Philippines’ broader renewable energy objectives. The country aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its power generation mix to at least 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.

The Laguna Lake project therefore represents both an investment opportunity and a strategic addition to the Philippines’ clean energy transition, supporting the government’s efforts to diversify electricity sources while advancing long-term energy security and sustainability.
