IGBC Launches 33rd Chapter in Siliguri to Advance Green Building in North Bengal

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has launched its 33rd chapter in Siliguri, aimed at promoting green building practices and supporting the development of a resource-efficient and resilient built environment across North Bengal.

The IGBC Siliguri Chapter was formally launched at an event in Siliguri, bringing together representatives from the Government of West Bengal, real estate and infrastructure sectors, architects, developers, building-services professionals and sustainability practitioners.

The new chapter will provide a platform for stakeholders to collaborate on sustainable construction, green building technologies and resource-efficient development in the region. Discussions at the launch focused on the growth of the green building movement in India, opportunities for sustainable development in North Bengal and emerging green building materials and technologies.

The event was attended by Anandamay Barman, Minister of State for Finance and Transport, Government of West Bengal, along with C. Shekar Reddy, National Chairman, IGBC; Satish Mitruka, Chairman, CII North Bengal Council; and M. Anand, Executive Director, CII Indian Green Building Council.

Speaking at the launch, Barman said the new chapter would help bring sustainability closer to North Bengal’s development priorities. He highlighted the importance of resource-efficient practices and collaboration between government, industry and professionals as infrastructure and urban development expand in the region.

C. Shekar Reddy said the chapter would help extend the green building movement to North Bengal by bringing together government, industry, architects, developers, academia and other stakeholders. He added that greater awareness, knowledge-sharing and the adoption of innovative technologies could support a greener and more resilient built environment.

The IGBC Siliguri Chapter will be led by K. K. Roy as Chairman and Sandeep Goyal as Co-Chairman. Roy is the Founder and Director of Green Architecture Consulting Engineers Pvt. Ltd., while Goyal is the Founder and Managing Director of SandeepG Real Estate.

The launch programme also included the felicitation of an IGBC Green Project and the launch of IGBC Student Chapters, with the aim of recognising green building initiatives and building sustainability awareness among future professionals.

A panel discussion on “Local Aspirations and Way Forward Towards a Greener Built North Bengal” examined the region’s sustainability priorities and the role of government, developers, architects and other stakeholders in advancing green construction.

The event also featured a technical session on green building materials, technologies and solutions, covering low-carbon materials, high-performance building envelopes, sustainable materials, energy-efficient infrastructure and low-carbon cement. The session also discussed approaches to adopting green building practices without significantly increasing project costs.

The launch of the IGBC Siliguri Chapter is expected to strengthen CII-IGBC’s engagement with stakeholders in North Bengal and support greater adoption of green building practices as the region’s infrastructure and urban development expand.
