India Highlights 552 GW Power Capacity And Clean Energy Progress At G20 Energy Meeting

Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Shri Manohar Lal participated in the G20 Energy Abundance Working Group meetings held in Houston on September 15, 2026. During the meeting, he addressed ministerial sessions under Pillar 1 and Pillar 2 and held bilateral discussions with senior officials from the United States and Canada on strengthening energy cooperation.

Shri Manohar Lal highlighted India’s progress in developing a secure, resilient and sustainable energy system. He noted that India has reached 552 GW of installed power capacity, with the share of non-fossil energy sources exceeding 50%. He also highlighted developments in solar power, energy storage, nuclear energy and clean cooking access.

The Minister said India supports technology-neutral and inclusive energy pathways to meet growing energy requirements. He also highlighted India’s international initiatives, including the International Solar Alliance, One Sun One World One Grid and the Global Biofuels Alliance, aimed at promoting greater global cooperation in clean energy.

Regulatory reforms were another key focus of India’s intervention. Shri Manohar Lal highlighted digital platforms such as the National Single Window System, PARIVESH and PM Gati Shakti, which are being used to streamline approvals and improve regulatory predictability. He stressed that faster and more efficient permitting processes are important for timely infrastructure development.

During his bilateral meeting with Chris Wright, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy, the Minister discussed India’s future power infrastructure requirements linked to artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and data centres. The two sides also discussed India’s nuclear expansion plans and reaffirmed cooperation under the U.S.–India Energy Security Partnership, with a focus on clean energy, resilient infrastructure and emerging technologies.

Shri Manohar Lal also met Corey Hogan, Parliamentary Secretary to Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. Discussions covered energy efficiency, low-emission technologies and offshore exploration under the Samundra Manthan scheme. The Minister invited Canadian companies to participate in India’s expanding exploration and production sector.

India reiterated its focus on diversifying energy sources, expanding clean and reliable baseload capacity and adopting emerging technologies. The country also reaffirmed its commitment to international partnerships aimed at supporting secure, sustainable and affordable energy.
