Adani Group is set to expand its energy storage footprint in Assam with plans to develop 2,700 MW of pumped storage capacity, forming a key part of the Group’s ₹63,000 crore investment in the state’s power sector.
Through Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), the Group plans to invest approximately ₹15,000 crore in two Pumped Storage Plants (PSPs) with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW. The projects will add large-scale storage infrastructure to Assam’s evolving power system and complement other investments across generation and grid infrastructure.
Pumped storage facilities can store electricity by using power to move water to an elevated reservoir and subsequently release it through turbines when electricity is required. Such systems can provide large-scale, long-duration energy storage and help electricity networks manage variations between power supply and demand.
The storage investment forms part of a broader power-sector programme that also includes Adani Power Limited’s ₹48,000 crore, 3,200 MW Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Plant at Chapar in Dhubri district. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently laid the foundation stone for the project, which is planned for phased commissioning from December 2030.
Alongside generation and storage capacity, Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) is implementing smart metering projects in Assam to support the modernisation of the state’s electricity distribution infrastructure.
Together, the pumped storage, power generation and grid-modernisation projects represent approximately ₹63,000 crore of planned power-sector investment in Assam.
The 2,700 MW pumped storage portfolio is particularly significant for the state’s future energy infrastructure, providing storage capacity that can support grid flexibility as electricity demand and variable renewable generation increase.
Across sectors, Adani Group’s investments in Assam are expected to exceed ₹80,000 crore, encompassing power, energy storage, electricity distribution infrastructure and aviation, among other activities.
