Located at the site of the former Munmorah coal-fired power station, the Waratah Super Battery has a power capacity of 850 MW and an energy storage capacity of 1,680 MWh. The project was commissioned by the NSW Government and is built, owned and operated by Akaysha Energy.

The battery forms part of the broader Waratah Super Battery Project, which also includes a System Integrity Protection Scheme (SIPS) Control System delivered by Transgrid. The battery and control system are designed to provide rapid response to disturbances on the electricity network and support the transmission of additional renewable energy.

According to Akaysha Energy, the project is intended to provide grid stability and system security while supporting the integration of renewable energy into the NSW electricity network.

Akaysha Energy CEO Nick Carter said reaching final commercial operations marks a significant milestone for the company, its project partners and NSW.

The project attracted more than $1 billion in private investment and involved approximately 1,000 people during its design and construction phases. At the peak of construction, around 170 workers were engaged on site.

The project involved collaboration between Akaysha Energy, EnergyCo, the NSW Government, Transgrid and delivery partners including Consolidated Power Projects Australia, Hitachi Energy, Wilson Transformer Company, REPT Battero and EVE Energy.

The completion of the Waratah Super Battery adds large-scale energy storage capacity to the NSW electricity system and is expected to support grid reliability and the continued integration of renewable generation.
