Adani Green Energy Expands Khavda BESS Capacity to 6.63 GWh

Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has expanded its operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity at Khavda, Gujarat, to 6.63 GWh, up from 3.55 GWh in June 2026.

With the latest addition, AGEL now accounts for more than 50% of India’s operational BESS capacity, which stands at approximately 12.6 GWh. The company said the Khavda installation is the world’s largest operational battery energy storage system at a single location.

AGEL achieved the 6.63 GWh milestone within 14 months of commencing on-site BESS construction at Khavda. The latest capacity addition was commissioned within 10 months of the start of construction.

The BESS is integrated with AGEL’s renewable energy development at Khavda, where the company is developing a 30 GW renewable energy plant across 538 square kilometres of land.

According to AGEL, the 6.63 GWh BESS can store enough clean energy to power around two million homes for a day. The company said the capacity is also equivalent to the battery storage of more than 150,000 mid-sized electric vehicles and can store nearly twice the estimated daily electricity requirement of the Delhi Metro.

The expansion is expected to strengthen the integration of renewable energy into the electricity grid by enabling power generated from renewable sources to be stored and dispatched when required. Battery storage can also support grid stability, peak demand management, reduce renewable energy curtailment and improve the dispatchability of clean power.

The Khavda BESS uses lithium-ion battery technology, integrated with an Energy Management System (EMS) and automated telemetry for managing charging and discharging, optimising system performance and supporting grid services.

Sagar Adani, Executive Director at Adani Green Energy, said the company plans to continue scaling energy storage solutions, including battery and pumped storage, as electricity demand in India increases.

AGEL attributed the rapid deployment to advanced project controls, digital monitoring systems, agile construction management practices and partnerships with global BESS original equipment manufacturers. The company said these measures helped maintain project timelines while meeting quality and safety requirements.

AGEL is targeting the addition of more than 10 GWh of BESS capacity in FY2026-27 and plans to reach 50 GWh of storage capacity over the next five years.

Alongside battery storage, the company is also developing pumped storage projects (PSPs) as part of its strategy to build large-scale, firm and dispatchable renewable power capacity.
