Cygni Energy Private Limited and Indus Towers Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration on sourcing energy storage solutions for telecom infrastructure in India.
Under the proposed collaboration, the companies plan to evaluate the establishment of battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturing capacity of up to 1.5 GWh to address the evolving energy requirements of India’s telecom infrastructure. The partnership will also assess advanced battery technologies for telecom applications, with a focus on improving reliability, energy efficiency and the sustainability of telecom operations.
Cygni Energy said the proposed initiative is aimed at developing manufacturing scale and technology capabilities to support the energy requirements of large-scale telecom infrastructure. The company also plans to expand its battery portfolio from its existing 100 Ah solutions to higher-capacity 314 Ah systems and other emerging battery technologies.
Venkat Rajaraman, Founder and CEO of Cygni Energy, said the initiative is focused on building manufacturing readiness and technology capabilities to support the evolving energy requirements of telecom infrastructure. He added that the company aims to combine manufacturing scale, reliability and Indian engineering to develop energy storage solutions that can support the expansion of India’s digital infrastructure.
Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Institute Professor at IIT Madras and Chairman of ITEL Foundation, said collaboration among energy storage users, startups, manufacturers and technology institutions can support the development and adoption of storage technologies in India. He noted that the telecom sector provides an important application for advancing battery technologies and manufacturing capabilities.
The proposed collaboration comes as India continues to expand both its digital and energy infrastructure. Energy storage systems can support telecom infrastructure by providing backup power, improving energy efficiency and enabling greater integration of renewable energy.
The partnership is also expected to contribute to the development of domestic energy storage manufacturing capabilities, strengthen supply-chain resilience and support the adoption of next-generation battery technologies in India.
