Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) Australia has commissioned the 100 MW/200 MWh Terang Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Victoria, marking the company’s first standalone utility-scale battery storage project in Australia.
Located in Terang, Victoria, the project is designed to support electricity grid stability and resilience by providing dispatchable energy capacity during periods of peak demand. The commissioning increases FRV Australia’s operational asset portfolio in the country to nine projects and expands its predominantly solar-focused generation portfolio with battery storage capacity.
The Terang BESS received AUD 7 million in funding through the second round of the Victorian Government’s Energy Innovation Fund (EIF). The funding supported the deployment of grid-forming inverter technology at the project, contributing to Victoria’s efforts to increase renewable energy generation to 65% by 2030.
Canadian Solar was appointed as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, while TEC-C carried out the balance-of-plant works. The facility comprises 48 SolBank 3.0 E battery containers manufactured by e-Storage and 38 SMA inverters.
The project supported approximately 40 full-time-equivalent roles during construction and created procurement and business opportunities for local companies and suppliers.
FRV Australia also supported community initiatives during the development of the project, including sponsorship programmes for the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF) and the Terang Mortlake Netball Club.
Michael Steiner, CEO of FRV Australia, said the commissioning of Terang represents a significant milestone for the company and demonstrates its ability to develop and operate utility-scale dispatchable energy infrastructure. He added that the project will provide firming capacity during peak periods while supporting grid reliability and Victoria’s energy transition.
Terang is part of FRV Australia’s growing battery storage portfolio in Victoria. The company is currently developing the 250 MW/500 MWh Gnarwarre Battery Energy Storage System, which is under construction and targeted for completion by the end of 2027.
FRV Australia also has a pipeline of standalone BESS and solar-plus-storage projects under development across New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.
