Zelestra, EDP Sign PPAs to Add 462 MWh of Battery Storage to Operational Solar Plants in Spain

Zelestra and EDP have signed two new power purchase agreements (PPAs) to hybridise operational solar plants in Spain with battery energy storage systems (BESS), taking their partnership to four hybrid projects and more than 1 GWh of contracted storage capacity in the country.

The long-term agreements cover Zelestra’s operational Pedroso solar plant in Seville and Valkyria solar plant in Castilla-La Mancha.

Under the agreement, Zelestra will develop a 25 MW BESS with approximately 100 MWh of storage capacity at the 31 MWdc Pedroso solar plant. At the Valkyria project, a 90.45 MW BESS with approximately 362 MWh of storage capacity will be integrated with the 150 MWdc solar plant. Both battery systems will have a four-hour duration.

EDP, which is already the offtaker for both solar plants, is expanding its role in the Spanish battery storage market through the new agreements.

The latest PPAs bring the companies’ Spanish hybridisation partnership to four projects. In 2025, EDP and Zelestra signed what they described as Spain’s first combined solar and BESS PPA, covering 170 MWdc of solar capacity and 400 MWh of storage at a project in Trujillo, Extremadura.

Earlier in 2026, the companies signed an agreement to hybridise an operational solar plant, adding a 160 MWh BESS to the 50 MW Pizarroso solar plant in Cáceres. Across the four projects, the partnership now represents more than 1 GWh of contracted battery storage capacity.

The companies said hybridising existing operational solar plants can provide a faster route to increasing grid flexibility, as the projects already have land, grid connections and renewable generation infrastructure in place.

Pedro Neves Ferreira, CEO of Global Energy Management at EDP, said the company is developing solutions that combine renewable generation with flexibility assets to improve the value and efficiency of clean energy. He added that integrating energy storage with renewable generation can strengthen system resilience and support electrification and decarbonisation.

Jaime Burguete, CEO of Zelestra in Spain, said the partnership is enabling large-scale storage capacity in the Spanish market and described energy storage as a growing segment of the country’s renewable energy sector.
