Tata Power’s TP Solar Manufactures 1 GW Solar Modules And 0.9 GW Solar Cells In Q2 FY27, Strengthening Domestic Solar Manufacturing

TP Solar Limited, the solar manufacturing arm of Tata Power and a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), has reported strong manufacturing performance in the second quarter of FY27, producing 1 GW of solar modules and 0.9 GW of solar cells between July and September 2026.

During the first half of FY27, covering April to September 2026, the company manufactured a total of 2 GW of solar modules and 1.8 GW of solar cells. The production figures reflect TP Solar’s continued manufacturing capacity ramp-up, improving operational efficiency and growing contribution to India’s domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem.

The company operates a 4.3 GW integrated solar cell and module manufacturing facility in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, recognised as one of India’s largest single-location solar manufacturing plants. Tata Power, through TPREL, has invested approximately ₹4,300 crore in establishing the facility as part of its strategy to strengthen domestic solar manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on imported solar components.

The manufacturing facility produces solar modules compliant with India’s Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) norms and the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) framework. By manufacturing solar cells and modules domestically, TP Solar aims to support the increasing demand for locally produced solar equipment across utility-scale, commercial, industrial and other renewable energy applications.

Equipped with advanced Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact (TOPCon) and Mono PERC technologies, the Tirunelveli plant incorporates modern manufacturing processes designed to improve solar cell efficiency, product quality and production reliability.

The facility also integrates artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML)-driven systems alongside Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) to streamline manufacturing operations, enhance productivity and improve overall operational efficiency. These technologies support automated material handling, production monitoring and process optimisation.

Beyond manufacturing capabilities, the facility has established a significant benchmark for workforce inclusion, with women accounting for nearly 80% of its employees. The workforce composition reflects Tata Power’s emphasis on diversity, skill development and inclusive employment opportunities within India’s expanding clean energy manufacturing sector.

The ₹4,300 crore investment represents an important component of Tata Power’s broader strategy to develop an integrated renewable energy value chain, encompassing domestic solar equipment manufacturing, renewable power generation and clean energy solutions.

The company’s manufacturing expansion also aligns with India’s efforts to strengthen self-reliance in solar cell and module production, particularly as domestic demand increases in response to renewable energy capacity additions and government initiatives supporting indigenous manufacturing.

With 2 GW of solar modules and 1.8 GW of solar cells produced during the first six months of FY27, TP Solar continues to strengthen its position in India’s solar manufacturing industry.

The Tirunelveli facility is expected to play an important role in supporting Tata Power’s renewable energy expansion while contributing to India’s long-term clean energy transition, domestic manufacturing objectives and net-zero ambitions.
