The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in renewable energy development, energy storage integration and power sector planning in Meghalaya. The three-year agreement aims to support the state’s transition towards a more sustainable, reliable and resilient electricity system through technical collaboration, research and capacity-building initiatives.
The MoU was signed at MeECL’s headquarters in Shillong in the presence of senior representatives from the Government of Meghalaya, MeECL and TERI. The partnership will bring together TERI’s research and technical expertise with the operational capabilities of MeECL and its subsidiaries, including Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL), Meghalaya Power Transmission Corporation Limited (MePTCL) and Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL).
Under the agreement, the organisations will explore opportunities for renewable energy development and assess Meghalaya’s current and future electricity system flexibility requirements. The collaboration will focus on identifying suitable energy storage technologies capable of supporting renewable energy integration and addressing the state’s evolving power system requirements.
The partnership will also cover integrated electricity demand and supply projections, resource adequacy studies and renewable energy capacity addition planning. These activities are intended to support long-term electricity infrastructure development and help the state evaluate its future energy requirements.
Additional areas of cooperation include energy efficiency, demand-side management and capacity-building programmes for electricity distribution company officials and other stakeholders. The initiatives will focus on strengthening technical expertise and improving the integration and management of distributed renewable energy solutions.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Sanjay Goyal, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary of the Power Department, Government of Meghalaya, and Chairman and Managing Director of MeECL, highlighted the potential of distributed renewable energy combined with storage technologies to improve electricity supply economics in northeastern states. He emphasised that aligning national and state-level incentives could accelerate the adoption of such solutions, particularly in regions where power supply costs remain high.
Alekhya Datta, Director of the Electricity and Renewables Division at TERI, underscored the importance of continuous training and technical assistance for distribution company officials. He noted that financial incentives alone would not be sufficient to accelerate the deployment of distributed renewable energy technologies without adequate institutional capacity and hands-on support.
The agreement was signed by I Majaw (MCS), Director, Corporate Affairs, MeECL, on behalf of MeECL and its subsidiaries, and Alekhya Datta, Director, Electricity and Renewables Division, TERI, representing TERI.
The MoU will remain valid for three years from the date of execution and may be extended through mutual written consent between the organisations.
The collaboration is expected to facilitate knowledge exchange, technical assessments and institutional capacity development, supporting Meghalaya’s efforts to expand renewable energy adoption and strengthen electricity system flexibility. By focusing on energy storage technologies, resource planning and distribution-sector capabilities, the partnership aims to contribute to the state’s broader energy transition objectives.
The signing ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ashish Kumar Sharma, Fellow at TERI.
