London Stadium Surpasses 1 Million kWh Solar Energy Generation Milestone, Avoids 177 Tonnes of Carbon Emissions

London Stadium has achieved a major renewable energy milestone, generating more than 1 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity since its rooftop solar installation became operational in July 2025. The achievement highlights the growing role of large sporting and entertainment venues in adopting on-site renewable energy solutions to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy sustainability.

The solar installation, delivered by Ameresco UK, has generated enough electricity to match the annual power consumption of more than 350 households while avoiding approximately 177 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. The milestone was reached within the first 14 months of renewable energy generation at the iconic multi-purpose venue, which originally hosted the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The stadium’s solar power system features 3,350 photovoltaic panels integrated directly into a 6,500-square-metre roof membrane, making it one of Europe’s largest stadium rooftop solar installations. The system enables the venue to generate renewable electricity on-site while continuing to accommodate major international sporting competitions, concerts and other large-scale events.

In June 2026 alone, the solar installation generated more than 140,000 kWh of electricity, accounting for approximately 21% of London Stadium’s total electricity demand during the month. The overall electricity generated since commissioning is equivalent to the energy required to power the venue’s major events over the period, including concerts by Metallica and Take That, international athletics competitions and West Ham United football fixtures.

During the first 14 months of solar operations, London Stadium welcomed more than two million spectators across various sporting and entertainment events. These included major athletics performances, the 20th anniversary of Soccer Aid and several sold-out concerts, demonstrating the venue’s ability to integrate renewable energy infrastructure into its ongoing operations.

Commenting on the achievement, Sacha Giovannoni, Sustainability Manager at London Stadium, described the milestone as an important step towards establishing the venue as one of the United Kingdom’s most sustainable stadiums. Giovannoni highlighted the contribution of innovative technologies and strategic partnerships in achieving measurable environmental improvements and advancing sustainable venue management.

Justin Jacober, Managing Director at Ameresco UK, said the achievement demonstrates how major public venues can benefit from investing in long-term renewable energy infrastructure. He noted that the solar installation is already delivering measurable reductions in carbon emissions while enabling London Stadium to continue hosting world-class sporting and entertainment events.

The rooftop solar project forms part of a wider £4.35 million climate action investment supported by the Mayor of London’s Green Finance Fund. The investment is intended to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon technologies and contribute to London’s broader transition towards net-zero emissions.

The milestone reflects the increasing potential of rooftop solar installations at large public infrastructure facilities, particularly stadiums and entertainment venues with substantial electricity requirements. By integrating solar generation into existing infrastructure, London Stadium is demonstrating how major venues can reduce their environmental impact, improve energy efficiency and contribute to the United Kingdom’s long-term clean energy transition.
