EDP APAC, the Asia-Pacific division of global renewable energy company EDP, has secured a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Akamai Technologies in Singapore. The agreement marks Akamai’s first renewable energy commitment in the Asia-Pacific region and represents a significant step in the company’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its expanding digital infrastructure.
Under the agreement, Akamai will purchase renewable electricity generated by a portfolio of rooftop solar installations across 27 operational sites in Singapore. The installations have a combined capacity of 13 megawatt-peak (MWp) and are expected to generate up to 17,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity annually.
The project is also expected to avoid approximately 5,850 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions each year. By sourcing locally generated solar power, the partnership aims to support Singapore’s clean energy transition while helping Akamai meet its corporate sustainability objectives.
The agreement comes amid rising electricity demand driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital services. As businesses increase their reliance on digital infrastructure, the energy required to operate data networks and related systems continues to grow. This has increased the importance of securing reliable renewable electricity to support digital expansion while limiting greenhouse gas emissions.
The rooftop solar portfolio offers a practical approach to renewable energy development in Singapore, where limited land availability presents challenges for large-scale solar projects. By using rooftops across multiple operational sites, the initiative demonstrates how urban infrastructure can contribute to clean electricity generation without requiring extensive additional land.
The project also supports Singapore’s national sustainability ambitions under the Singapore Green Plan 2030, which includes measures to expand solar energy deployment and accelerate the country’s transition towards a more sustainable economy.
For Akamai, the agreement represents an important milestone in extending its renewable energy strategy into Asia-Pacific. The company has already established renewable energy initiatives across the United States and Europe and is now expanding its efforts into another key regional market.
Akamai has set a broader corporate target of achieving 100% renewable energy usage and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The Singapore agreement is expected to contribute to these goals by increasing the company’s access to renewable electricity in the region.
Through its partnership with EDP APAC, Akamai is seeking to align its growing digital operations with its environmental commitments while supporting the wider adoption of solar energy in Singapore.
