NTPC Limited, India’s largest power utility, has signed a Cooperation Agreement with Africa50, an investor specialising in African infrastructure, to jointly identify, assess and develop power-generation projects and cross-border electricity trading opportunities across Africa. The partnership aims to advance commercially viable power projects, attract investment and improve reliable electricity supply for households and businesses across the continent.
Under the agreement, both organisations will combine their respective strengths in engineering, project development, financing and infrastructure investment to identify promising opportunities in mutually agreed African countries. The collaboration will focus on assessing project feasibility, developing viable solutions and supporting selected projects from the initial planning stages towards implementation.
NTPC will contribute its technical, engineering, construction management, project development and operational expertise. The company will assess the feasibility of proposed projects, provide engineering solutions and support their development and execution. Its experience in managing large-scale power infrastructure is expected to contribute to the development of reliable electricity systems across participating African markets.
Africa50 will complement NTPC’s capabilities through its project development and financing expertise. The organisation will use its continental project pipeline and relationships with governments and regulators to identify priority opportunities, structure projects for investment and support their progress throughout their development life cycles. Africa50 is backed by 34 African country shareholders, providing access to regional stakeholders and opportunities for infrastructure development.
NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh said the partnership would combine NTPC’s technical and operational experience with Africa50’s project development capabilities and relationships across the continent. He added that the collaboration would support reliable electricity supply and regional power trading.
Alain Ebobisse, Group Chief Executive Officer of Africa50, highlighted the importance of reliable and competitively priced electricity for Africa’s industrial and economic transformation. He said the partnership would combine Africa50’s ability to develop and de-risk investable projects with NTPC’s technical expertise to translate public-sector ambitions into private investment in power generation.
The agreement is expected to strengthen cooperation between India and African countries in the power sector. By supporting commercially viable generation projects and regional electricity trade, the partnership aims to expand power infrastructure, encourage investment, promote industrial development and create employment opportunities across Africa.
