FNB, WesBank, and RMB Launch Platform to Expand Business Solar Adoption in South Africa

FNB, WesBank, and RMB have launched a unified digital platform called nav.energy to help businesses in South Africa adopt renewable energy solutions through simplified financing, installation, and energy management services. The initiative aims to make clean energy more accessible to commercial and corporate customers facing rising electricity costs and ongoing power supply challenges.

The platform brings together financial services and renewable energy solutions through a single digital entry point. It is designed to help businesses identify suitable energy systems, explore financing options, and connect with specialists who can guide them through the transition to cleaner and more reliable power sources.

nav.energy offers several commercial models to meet the different financial and operational needs of businesses. Under the first option, companies can use WesBank financing to purchase and own photovoltaic solar installations. This arrangement allows businesses to retain full ownership of their systems and benefit from long-term savings, although they remain responsible for maintenance and ongoing operations.

A second option is a rent-to-own model, under which businesses make fixed monthly payments over an agreed period. Once the contract ends, ownership of the installed energy system transfers to the customer. This structure provides an alternative for companies that want to spread their investment costs over time while eventually owning the infrastructure.

The third option is a managed energy service or power purchase agreement (PPA). Under this arrangement, the energy system is installed and operated on behalf of the customer. Businesses pay for the electricity generated without directly managing the equipment, offering a more convenient approach to renewable energy adoption.

Currently, nav.energy primarily serves business, commercial, and corporate customers. Interested organizations can submit customized requests through the platform and consult energy specialists to identify solutions suited to their facilities and requirements.

The institutions also plan to introduce additional digital tools, including energy calculators, system-sizing features, and a directory of verified green technology suppliers. These upgrades are expected to improve the customer experience and simplify decision-making.

In the longer term, the platform is expected to expand its services to household consumers. Through this initiative, FNB, WesBank, and RMB aim to support South African businesses in reducing energy expenses, improving energy security, and meeting their sustainability targets.
