Vietnam’s Dak Lak Province has approved a VND9.149 trillion (approximately US$355 million) floating solar power project with a planned generation capacity of 452 MW. The project will be developed on the Ea Sup Thuong Reservoir in the Central Highlands region, marking a major step towards expanding renewable energy generation and making better use of water resources for clean electricity production.
The project will cover approximately 526 hectares, of which around 523 hectares will be located on the reservoir’s water surface. The facility will include floating solar panels, advanced inverters, a floating 35-kV medium-voltage cable system and integrated RMU step-up substations. These components will support electricity generation and the transfer of power from the solar installation to the national grid.
The project infrastructure will also include a 35/220-kV step-up transformer station, an operations and management centre and a battery energy storage system. Additionally, a dedicated 6-kilometre 220-kV transmission line will be constructed to connect the solar power facility to Vietnam’s national electricity network.
The approved project will be located across Ea Sup and Ea Kiet Communes in Dak Lak Province. It has been granted an operating term of 50 years, beginning from the official issuance of land-use rights and completion of the relevant regulatory approvals.
Provincial authorities have established a clear implementation schedule for the development. Construction and commissioning must be completed within 18 months after the finalisation of land allocation, land leasing or land-use conversion decisions. The administration has also stipulated that the entire project must be completed and begin commercial operations no later than the fourth quarter of 2028.
The project will be implemented by a consortium of four companies selected by the provincial administration. The participating companies are IPC Engineering and Construction JSC, Tay Nguyen Infrastructure Construction and Development JSC, SD Vietnam Construction Investment JSC and Ea Sup Investment JSC.
The development is expected to strengthen Dak Lak’s position in Vietnam’s renewable energy sector while supporting the country’s broader clean energy ambitions. By combining floating solar technology with battery energy storage and dedicated transmission infrastructure, the project will contribute to expanding solar generation capacity and improving the integration of renewable electricity into the national grid.
