ACCIONA Energía has commenced commercial operations at its Opor and Boraja II wind farms in Croatia, adding a combined 72 MW of wind power capacity to the country’s renewable energy sector. Both projects have completed commissioning and are now supplying electricity to the national grid through Hrvatski Operator Tržišta Energije (HROTE), Croatia’s energy market operator.
The Opor wind farm, located in the Split-Dalmatia region, has an installed capacity of 27 MW and comprises six wind turbines. Boraja II, situated in the Šibenik-Knin region, has a capacity of 45 MW and features ten turbines. Both facilities use 4.5 MW Nordex turbines installed on 105-metre steel towers.
The projects operate under 12-year contracts for difference awarded through a public auction conducted under a programme introduced by the Croatian Government and HROTE. Approved by the European Commission, the programme aims to accelerate renewable energy deployment. The contracts provide a reference price for generated electricity, supporting revenue stability and reducing exposure to fluctuations in wholesale electricity markets.
Together, the two wind farms are expected to generate approximately 203 GWh of clean electricity annually and prevent around 135,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Their construction also supported employment, creating up to 400 direct jobs during peak construction activity.
With the commissioning of these projects, ACCIONA Energía has increased its installed wind power capacity in Croatia to 102 MW. The company has operated the 30 MW Jelinak wind farm in Split-Dalmatia since 2013.
ACCIONA Energía is also developing the 189 MWp Promina solar plant in Šibenik-Knin, further expanding its renewable energy portfolio in Croatia and strengthening its presence in the country’s clean energy market.
