Far Eastern University (FEU) Manila has completed its transition to renewable electricity across all eligible accounts at its main campus, marking a significant step in the institution’s sustainability efforts. The milestone was achieved after the university gymnasium was integrated into its clean energy supply network, extending renewable electricity coverage to all eligible facilities on the campus.
The transition was implemented through the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), a government initiative that enables qualified electricity consumers to choose renewable energy sources for their power requirements. With the latest integration, classrooms, science laboratories, libraries, administrative offices, student centres and the gymnasium are now supplied entirely with clean electricity under the programme.
The achievement builds on FEU’s wider commitment to reducing its environmental impact through renewable energy adoption and energy-efficient infrastructure. By April 2025, renewable sources were already supplying more than 98% of the total electricity requirements across the FEU Group, reflecting the institution’s continued progress towards its sustainability objectives.
FEU Alabang reached 100% renewable electricity consumption in December 2024, four years ahead of its original target. The campus has also received green building certifications in recognition of its efforts to improve resource efficiency and promote environmentally responsible operations.
FEU began its transition towards cleaner electricity in 2017 through the Retail Competition and Open Access Program. Starting with a relatively small power supply capacity, the university gradually expanded its renewable energy procurement over the following years. The institution has combined electricity sourcing through external renewable energy contracts with investments in on-site solar power generation.
Solar panels have been installed across several FEU campuses, including FEU Roosevelt Rodriguez, FEU Roosevelt Marikina and FEU Cavite. These installations support the university’s broader strategy of integrating renewable energy into its infrastructure while strengthening its commitment to sustainable campus operations.
Rosanna Salcedo, chief financial officer of FEU, said completing the transition at the Manila campus reflects years of planning, investment and commitment to environmental responsibility. She highlighted that sustainability at the institution extends beyond academic discussions and is incorporated into its daily operations.
The transition also demonstrates how educational institutions can use renewable energy procurement programmes to reduce their dependence on conventional electricity sources. By combining green electricity contracts with on-site solar installations, FEU has developed a broader approach to managing its energy requirements.
With all eligible accounts at its main Manila campus now covered by renewable electricity, FEU continues to advance its environmental objectives across its campuses. The development reinforces the institution’s focus on integrating sustainability into campus management, infrastructure planning and long-term operational practices.
