Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has fully commissioned a major power transmission project in Karnataka designed to support the integration of renewable energy into the national electricity grid. The project, titled “Transmission Scheme for Integration of Renewable Energy Zone (Phase-II) in Koppal-II (Phase-A & B) and Gadag-II (Phase-A),” became commercially operational on October 23, 2026.
The company confirmed that it received the formal Notification for Commercial Operation on the same date, marking the completion of the project and the beginning of its commercial operations. The development is expected to strengthen transmission infrastructure in Karnataka and support the evacuation of renewable power generated from designated renewable energy zones.
The project focuses on improving the transmission network around the Koppal-II and Gadag-II regions, which are important areas for renewable energy development in the state. As India continues to expand its solar and wind power capacity, the availability of reliable transmission infrastructure is essential for delivering electricity from generation centres to consumption centres.
The completion of the scheme will help strengthen the power grid’s ability to accommodate renewable electricity and support the efficient transfer of clean energy. Transmission projects of this nature are important for reducing constraints in power evacuation and enabling greater integration of renewable energy into the country’s electricity network.
The project was originally assigned to POWERGRID Koppal Gadag Transmission Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of POWERGRID. However, following an order issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs on January 27, 2026, the subsidiary was amalgamated with POWERGRID Khavda II-C Transmission Limited, with the amalgamation becoming effective from March 1, 2026.
Despite the corporate restructuring, the transmission scheme progressed to commercial commissioning, completing an important infrastructure milestone for the company.
POWERGRID continues to play a significant role in developing India’s interstate and regional transmission infrastructure. The commissioning of the Karnataka project supports the country’s broader efforts to strengthen grid connectivity and accommodate increasing renewable energy generation.
As India advances its clean energy transition, investments in transmission networks remain essential for ensuring reliable electricity supply and making renewable energy resources more accessible across regions.
