Wirepas technology is now integrated into more than 12 million smart electricity meters across India, making the country the company’s largest market worldwide and its biggest deployment of smart metering connectivity. The Finland-based company has highlighted deployments in Assam, Ladakh, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, where its radio frequency (RF) mesh technology supports electricity meter connectivity across diverse geographical conditions.
The deployments come as India continues to expand smart metering under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), which targets 25 crore prepaid smart consumer meters by March 2028. According to the Ministry of Power, 5.97 crore smart meters had been installed across schemes by February 28, 2026.
Assam represents one of the largest deployments. The state had 64.45 lakh smart meters sanctioned under RDSS, of which 50.36 lakh were installed by February 28, 2026, according to the Ministry of Power. Wirepas said its Certified platform operates in approximately 4.6 million operational meters in the state, supporting connectivity across urban areas and regions affected by seasonal flooding.
In Ladakh, the technology is deployed across all 60,000 meters covered by the region’s smart metering programme, according to Wirepas. The Ministry of Power reported that 57,509 meters had been installed. The mesh network enables meters to communicate with neighbouring devices and relay readings without relying on individual cellular connections or dedicated gateways, supporting deployment in remote areas with limited telecommunications infrastructure.
Uttar Pradesh presents a different challenge, with its large rural population and widely dispersed electricity consumers. Wirepas, working with Polaris Smart Metering, said its RF mesh technology has been integrated into nearly one million smart meters in the state. The system is designed to operate without dedicated gateways or SIM cards, reducing dependence on additional communication infrastructure.
In Himachal Pradesh, Wirepas reported that its platform operates in approximately 700,000 smart meters. Ministry of Power data for December 31, 2025, showed around 28 lakh consumer smart meters sanctioned in the state, with just over seven lakh installed. The deployment covers areas where mountainous terrain, deep valleys and densely populated hill towns can complicate network connectivity.
Wirepas Chief Executive Officer Teppo Hemiä said India’s varied geography and population density provide a demanding environment for Internet of Things technology. He highlighted the platform’s ability to support connectivity in both crowded urban buildings and remote mountain settlements.
Smart metering is also part of India’s efforts to improve electricity distribution efficiency and utility finances. Ministry of Power data shows that national Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses declined from 21.91% in FY2021 to 15.04% in FY2025. Reliable meter communication can support timely billing, improve consumption monitoring and reduce discrepancies.
Wirepas has operated in India since 2018, working with meter manufacturers and advanced metering infrastructure providers, including Allied Engineering Works, Polaris Smart Metering, Capital Power Systems and HPL Electric & Power.
The company is participating in the Distribution Utility Meet in Jaipur on October 27–28, 2026, to share deployment experience with distribution utilities as India expands its smart metering programme.
