Polycab’s 5 kWh LFP Battery Pack Offers Scalable Energy Storage for Solar and Backup Applications

A rooftop solar system can generate electricity throughout the day, but maintaining access to that energy beyond daylight hours requires an effective storage solution. With energy storage becoming an increasingly important component of distributed solar systems, battery performance, scalability and intelligent management are key considerations for system owners.

Polycab India’s PHLVB-5K-AG3 low-voltage battery is designed to address these requirements through lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology, offering a combination of energy storage capacity, operational flexibility and integration with hybrid inverter systems.

Compact Storage with Practical Energy Capacity

The PHLVB-5K-AG3 battery provides 5.12 kWh of nominal energy capacity and 5 kWh of usable energy under specified test conditions. Built using LFP battery cell technology, the unit is designed for applications prioritising solar self-consumption and backup power availability.

Each battery operates as a standalone unit with a dedicated Battery Management System (BMS), supporting individual battery monitoring and management.

Key Technical Highlights

  • Battery technology: Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)
  • Usable capacity: 5 kWh per unit
  • Maximum continuous discharge: 150A, up to 7.2 kW
  • Round-trip efficiency: ≥96% under specified test conditions
  • Cycle life: More than 6,000 cycles (70% end-of-life capacity)
  • C-Rate & Maximum continuous discharge: High Unique C-rate capability 1.5C , Suitable for EV Grade applications ,  supporting 150A continuous discharge , yielding up to 7.2 kW of power delivery per unit.

Scalability for Evolving Energy Needs

One of the battery’s notable characteristics is its modular expansion capability. The system supports parallel connection of up to 30 battery units, enabling a total storage configuration of up to 150 kWh.

This flexibility allows users to begin with a smaller storage installation and expand capacity as their energy requirements increase. The battery supports multiple parallel connection arrangements, including direct connections, combiner boxes and busbars.

The product is specified for on-grid, on-grid with backup, and off-grid applications, providing flexibility across different solar power system configurations.

Intelligent Battery Management and Operational Reliability

Beyond storage capacity, the battery incorporates features intended to simplify monitoring and system operation. CAN communication supports interaction with compatible inverter systems, while remote diagnosis and updates can be performed through the inverter.

An automatic reboot function following undervoltage conditions adds another layer of operational convenience.

The battery supports continuous discharge currents of up to 150A and a maximum continuous charging current of 90A. Actual operating performance depends on factors including temperature, battery state of charge and the connected inverter model.

With a specified cycle life exceeding 6,000 cycles at 70% end-of-life capacity, the LFP-based system is positioned for applications requiring repeated charging and discharging over extended operating periods.

Installation Flexibility and Warranty Support

The battery weighs approximately 44 kg and supports wall-mounted installation, with floor-mounted and standard 19-inch rack configurations available through optional accessories.

It carries an IP20 ingress protection rating, making appropriate installation conditions an important consideration. The product literature also lists IEC 62619 and IEC 63056 among its safety standards.

Polycab specifies a 10-year warranty when the battery is paired with its single-phase hybrid inverters and an eight-year warranty when combined with its three-phase hybrid inverter range, subject to applicable terms.

With its modular architecture, integrated battery management and flexible installation options, the PHLVB-5K-AG3 provides a storage solution for solar applications seeking to improve energy utilisation and backup power availability.
