State environment and tourism minister Aaditya Thackeray is mulling installation of solar panels and windmills on highways and expressways in efforts to foster environment-friendly solutions by harnessing clean energy sources.

Discussing on carbon-neutral Pune 2030 at a conference recently, Thackeray said, open spaces and medians could have solar panels to generate clean forms of energy. Also plans to harvest rainwater along the stretches by collecting it in a reservoir are on the anvil. The water collected could be used to supply drought-prone areas and save nearby towns from water scarcity.

Underscoring the growth of EVs for public mobility, Thackeray emphasised that the EV charging stations should be surrounded by clean ecosystem for generation of power and that the scope of the environment Ministry should go beyond regulating sewage treatment plants and filing cases against civic body officials for violating environmental norms. Also the need for urban forests was highlighted at the event.
