Ohmium International, a US-based renewable energy start-up, said it has launched India’s first green hydrogen electrolyzer gigafactory at Bengaluru through its India subsidiary.
The gigafactory will manufacture India-made Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) hydrogen electrolyzers with an initial manufacturing capacity of about 500 MW per year and will scale it up to 2 GW per year.
The news comes at a time when industry majors like Adani, Reliance Industries, IOC, NTPC and Gail India have evinced interest in becoming part of India’s green hydrogen roadmap.
“The company is already in talks with some state-run majors and private players keen on hydrogen projects for supply of electrolysers from our electrolyser gigafactory in Karnataka,” said Pashupathy Gopalan, an Ohmium Investor.
The PEM hydrogen electrolyzer is the main equipment for the production of green hydrogen as it uses power generated from renewable resources to break water into hydrogen and oxygen. The start-up has developed technology which can be both distributed and scaled-up.
The company said that it would ensure availability of an end-to-end solution within the country and cut down dependence on imports for this key equipment.
“Our products are modular, high performance and high value. This ensures that they can be utilised to achieve levelized costs of hydrogen which support the growth of India’s economy,” said Arne Ballantine, chief executive officer and co-founder, Ohmium.
