Prime Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob stated that the Government has approved the redistribution and allocation of a renewable energy quota of 1,200MW to solar resources. This is an initial step in boosting the country’s commitment to the energy transition.
He stated that the Government anticipates 14,000 jobs and new investments of RM6 Bn to be created through the virtual power purchase arrangement. This will help support the country’s renewable sector development.
He stated that the new quota would be used to implement programmes under existing mechanisms, including the New Enhanced Dispatch Arrangements (NEDA) as well as solar installation programmes on roofs.
He said that the funds will be used to explore new renewable energy program implementation methods that include solar park development and electricity supply for new data centers.
He also stated that there will be a new option to procure green electricity supply for corporate companies through the VPPA concept. This will begin in the fourth quarter of 2022 with a 600MW quota.
