Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Launches ‘Women in Solar Energy’ Portal

The National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI) organized an event about women in India’s Energy sector. NSEFI organized the event to bring together women from all sectors and roles to gain a comprehensive view of how the sector of renewable energy creates an opportunity to discuss women’s involvement. The distinguished presence of Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman (Hon’ble Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Government of India) graced the event.


Dr. Vandana Kumar, Additional Secretary Rajya Sabha, Former Additional Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Suman Sharma (Managing Director, Solar Energy Cooperation of India Ltd) were present at the event.

In his welcome speech Pranav R Mehta (Chairman, NSEFI) stated that “No energy is greater than Women energy” and that women play an important part in all sectors to bring about the transformation.

The Inaugural Address was delivered by Hon’ble Finance Minister. She stated that the focus of the nation has changed from women development to women-led development. To achieve this goal, the Government and other organizations work around the clock to involve women in all key sectors and bring about systematic changes to the livelihood of the society. This focuses on how women can have access to Energy, Education and the ease of doing business. She spoke about the many ways that solar energy can generate income for women and the importance of banks supporting India’s financial empowerment. The Hon’ble Minister of Finance also met with women entrepreneurs in the Energy Sector and beneficiaries who work in villages to promote energy transition, especially in rural areas.

The Women in Solar Energy (WISE) portal was launched by Hon’ble Finance Minister. The Women in Solar Energy Portal provides guidance and job opportunities for women who want to work in the sector. The portal features mentors from the solar energy industry who will help women to follow their dreams. These mentors will create training modules for the Portal that will help women learn about different aspects of solar power sector. This portal will enable green energy transition through advancing women’s leadership within the energy sector. This will result in social progress and ultimately help to empower the economy. NSEFI in collaboration with Skill Council for Green Jobs, (SCGJ), launched the Women in Solar Energy Portal.
