On January 4th, 2023, the Indian Union Cabinet approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission with a budget of ₹19,744 crore from FY 2023-24 to FY 2029-30.
The aim of the Mission is to position India as a global hub for the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The Mission includes various components, such as facilitating demand creation through exports and domestic utilization, implementing a strategic intervention program for green hydrogen transition (SIGHT), launching pilot projects for various industries, developing green hydrogen hubs, supporting infrastructure development, establishing a regulatory framework, conducting research & development and skill development programs, and raising public awareness through outreach programs.
By 2030, the Mission targets to achieve a green hydrogen production capacity of 5 MMT per annum, reducing India’s dependence on fossil fuel imports by ₹1 lakh crore.
The Mission also aims to avert nearly 50 MMT per annum of CO2 emissions through the production and use of green hydrogen.
