ZOE Energy Storage has entered into a joint venture with a Saudi Arabian company to establish the country’s first large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturing plant. The project marks a major step in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to strengthen its clean energy sector and reduce dependence on imported energy storage equipment.

The manufacturing facility will cover nearly 150 acres and will be developed in two phases. In the first phase, the plant will have an annual production capacity of 6GWh, with commercial operations expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027. In the second phase, production capacity will be expanded to 18GWh, making it one of the region’s major energy storage manufacturing hubs.

According to the company, the facility will follow advanced European manufacturing standards and seek “Made in Saudi” certification. The products manufactured at the plant will fully comply with local grid requirements and support Saudi Arabia’s growing renewable energy market.

The project is closely aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to develop 130GW of renewable energy capacity and 48GWh of energy storage while increasing the share of clean energy in electricity generation to 50 percent. The new plant is also expected to strengthen the country’s local manufacturing capabilities and support long-term energy security goals.

Apart from serving domestic demand, the facility will also export battery energy storage systems to markets across the Gulf region, the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, and Africa. This is expected to position Saudi Arabia as a regional hub for energy storage manufacturing and clean energy technologies.

As part of the initiative, the project will include an on-site Green Energy Academy focused on training and certifying local professionals in energy storage technologies. The academy aims to support workforce development and create skilled talent for the country’s growing renewable energy sector.

The Saudi project represents ZOE Energy Storage’s second international production base after a similar development in Hungary. The company said the venture forms part of its broader global expansion strategy, combining its technology expertise with regional manufacturing and international service capabilities.

The company also highlighted that the factory will manufacture energy storage products specifically designed for harsh desert climates. These solutions are expected to serve not only Saudi Arabia but also other regions with extreme weather conditions.

ZOE Energy Group Chairman Huang Jun described the Middle East as an important driver of the global energy transition. He stated that the new facility would help accelerate the region’s clean energy growth while supporting the development of a strong local energy storage ecosystem.
