11th Annual Integrated Ratings of Power Distribution Utilities Released: Tata Power and Adani Electricity Among Top-Rated Discoms in India

The Ministry of Power has released its 11th Annual Integrated Rating and Ranking of Power Distribution Utilities report, which ranks power distribution utilities based on parameters such as operational and financial performance, regulatory compliance, customer service, and energy efficiency.

Tata Power’s Distribution Companies (Discoms) have achieved top ranking among national utilities, with Tata Power Mumbai Distribution and TP Western Odisha Distribution scoring 89.7 and 87.2 out of 100, respectively, and receiving an A+ grade each. Tata Power Delhi Distribution and TP Southern Odisha Distribution attained a score of 79.0 and 79.3 and received an A grade each. Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power, expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Power for the recognition and pledged to continue leading the nation’s distribution reforms.

Tata Power recently acquired power distribution in Odisha, comprising four Discoms in the state, serving a registered consumer base of 95 lakhs and a populace of 5 crores. With this acquisition, Tata Power increased its customer base from 25 lakhs to 1.2 crores in just two years.

Adani Electricity, which became India’s No. 1 Discom, is the only private company to be rated in the top five. Adani Electricity is also one of 15 Discoms to not have any negative marking. The utility recently announced the least tariff hike among Maharashtra’s Discoms, benefitting consumers.

The Noida Power Company Limited secured an A+ rating and received the highest A rating for 41 Discoms in the General Discom category (Urban and Rural), securing the 3rd rank in the consumer Service rating of discoms.

The rating report is prepared by McKinsey & Company and the assessment is based on the accounts of the past three financial years, from 2019-2020 to 2022- 2023.

The report has been prepared by PFC and McKinsey for FY 2022, while the Discom rating for Consumer Services for FY 2022 is based on the REC and E&Y study. These ratings and rankings are an important step in the power distribution sector’s journey towards efficiency, accountability and transparency, and enabling customers to make informed choices.
