In line with the national target, Pertamina has to achieve net zero emission (NZE) in 2060 or sooner, especially in Scope 1 and 2. This was conveyed by the Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development of Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) Fadli Rahman at Indonesia Partner Country Hannover Messe Conference.
“Pertamina has been known as an energy company the biggest in Indonesia. We have a strategic role, ie ensure national energy security. But that hasn’t It is widely known by the public that Pertamina is very serious about realizing a sustainable business,” said Fadli.
He added that in 2022 Pertamina would occupy the second position in the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) score in the integrated oil and gas sector. This position increases from the previous year, namely the seventh position.
From 2010 to 2021, Pertamina has _ reduced emissions by 29.07% or 7.4 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. The decline was contributed to several activities, including reducing emissions from processes, reducing emissions from combustion processes, energy efficiency, and using low carbon energy.
To achieve the NZE 2060 aspirations, Pertamina implementing two strategic initiatives, namely conducting decarbonising its current business and building a green business. There are six green business initiatives currently under construction _ Pertamina, namely the production of biofuels, energy development renewables, carbon sinks, development of clean hydrogen for transportation and industrial sectors, battery and EV ecosystem development, and carbon trading. Reducing emissions in Scope 1 & 2 in 2060 from the six initiatives is estimated at 25-30 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, or contributes around 2 per cent to national NZE aspirations.
Biofuel production is carried out at Pertamina’s refineries with a target capacity of reaching 200 thousand barrels per day for hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO) and hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) in 2060. As for clean hydrogen, development is targeted to reach capacity production of 1.8 million tons per year by 2040. Development one of which is clean hydrogen comes from geothermal which is managed by Pertamina NRE, one of Pertamina’s sub holdings. Pertamina NRE collaborates with a number of strategic partners , such as Sembcorp, IGNIS, Keppel, Chevron, TEPCO, Krakatau Steel and Pondera in the hydrogen development initiative clean.
Another renewable energy being developed by Pertamina is a solar power plant (PLTS). Moment Currently, PLTS has been built and utilized in a number of Pertamina’s operational areas , including gas stations which currently have reached more than 300 points. Fadli said that effort utilization of renewable energy is carried out by Pertamina as effort to make its business processes greener.
Equally important, decarbonization is also carried out through the carbon sink initiative. To achieve national energy security, Indonesia still needs fossil energy, which it currently does become Pertamina’s main business. However, to reduce carbon emissions in the upstream oil and gas sector, the carbon sink initiative is carried out by Pertamina n two ways, namely carbon capture storage (CCnature-bases solutionsed solutions (NBS) initiatives. For CCS/CCUS, Pertamina is working together with strategic partners from Japan and the nited States, while for NBS, collaboration is carried out together with Perhutani.
“As the largest national energy company, Pertamina plays a strategic role to ensure compliance demand and supply of energy to society today. And at the same time Pertamina also ensures energy security for future generations, one of which is through development green energy,” said Fadli closing his presentation.
