Global Energy Leaders Convene at 3rd ETWG Meeting to Drive Sustainable Solutions and Universal Access to Modern Energy

Over 100 delegates from G20 member countries, special invitee countries, and international organizations gathered for a three-day meeting, focusing on energy transitions and sustainability. The meeting witnessed the participation of esteemed organizations such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Economic Forum, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), International Energy Agency (IEA), and more.

Chaired by Shri Alok Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Government of India, the 3rd Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) Meeting discussed the draft Ministerial Communique, aiming to address priority areas. The meeting also included Shri Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, and Shri Vivek Bharadwaj, Secretary of the Ministry of Mines.

One of the key outcomes of the discussions was the unanimous agreement on prioritizing universal access to modern and sustainable energy for all. Member countries presented their viewpoints and reached a consensus on proposals aligned with India’s G20 Presidency.

Alongside the main meeting, eight side events took place, engaging policymakers, multilateral organizations, financial institutions, business organizations, and subject experts. These events covered various topics, including mobilizing low-cost international finance, addressing the challenges of a just transition in coal-dependent economies, accelerating the development and deployment of biofuels, harnessing offshore wind energy, decarbonizing challenging industrial sectors, exploring small module reactors (SMRs) for clean energy transition, synergizing G20 and B20 commitments, and promoting energy efficiency.

The discussions and progress made during the meeting will be carried forward to the 4th Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting, scheduled to be held in Goa from July 19-20, 2023.
