The Turkcell Group, a leading telecommunications company, is taking significant strides towards a more sustainable future by prioritizing energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. The group has announced its ambitious plans to transition its operations towards greater energy sustainability while effectively managing rising energy needs and associated costs.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, the Turkcell Group has set a remarkable target to derive 100% of its energy consumption from renewable sources by the year 2030. This strategic move reflects the company’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and contributing positively to the environment.
To achieve this goal, the Turkcell Group has already been actively involved in various renewable energy initiatives. In recent years, the company has spearheaded solar energy projects for its data centers and plazas. Additionally, in 2021, the group acquired the Karadağ Wind Power Plant, boasting an installed capacity of 18 MW. Furthermore, the integration of approximately 735 solar panels into their base stations showcases their commitment to harnessing sustainable energy solutions.
Looking ahead, the Turkcell Group is embarking on an ambitious plan to establish solar power plants with an aggregate installed capacity of 300 MW over the next three years. These solar power plants will operate with a self-consumption model, contributing to both energy efficiency and sustainability.
To facilitate this growth in renewable energy capacity, the company has been allocated an installed capacity of 213 MW under the provisions of the Regulation on Unlicensed Electricity Generation in the Electricity Market. The Turkcell Group is actively working in collaboration with the Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation (TEİAŞ) and regional Electricity Distribution companies to secure additional capacity allocations.
The estimated investment for these energy projects is around 240 million USD, taking into account current economic and macro indicators. This substantial investment underscores the company’s dedication to transforming its energy consumption and reducing its environmental impact.
Upon the successful implementation of these investments, the Turkcell Group anticipates that by 2026, approximately 65% of the electricity consumed by the company will be sourced from renewable energy resources. This transition marks a significant step forward in the company’s sustainability journey, demonstrating its commitment to fostering a greener future.
