In a remarkable transformation, rural churches in South Africa, which were long excluded from electrification efforts, are now experiencing the benefits of affordable solar power. This shift has been made possible by South Africa’s growing embrace of renewable energy and the transition away from coal-fired electricity.
For many decades, millions of Black South Africans living in rural areas were left without access to electricity, a legacy of apartheid colonialism. Despite significant electrification efforts after the end of apartheid in 1994, some rural districts, along with their churches, remained in the dark.
The cost of extending electricity grids to these remote areas was deemed too high, leaving rural churches without a reliable power source. However, this situation began to change in recent years as South Africa initiated a green transition to reduce its reliance on coal power and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Driven by the global push for decarbonization and the promise of international aid, South Africa began shifting towards renewable energy sources. Private solar installations, particularly those utilizing affordable Chinese-made solar equipment, have become increasingly common. This renewable energy surge has benefited many rural churches.
“We are the churches forgotten by coal-fired electricity of the last 100 years but now light up thanks to cheap solar gear from China,” said Derek Shashi, a retired Presbyterian cleric in rural South Africa.
Chinese solar exporters have played a significant role in supplying solar equipment to Southern African countries due to their competitive pricing and ease of installation. This influx of solar power technology has empowered rural churches and communities in South Africa.
Solar power has brought numerous advantages to these churches and their congregations. Besides illuminating places of worship, it has reduced nighttime burglaries and provided a means for rural worshippers to recharge their electronic devices at church premises. Solar energy has also allowed local mothers to heat milk for babies and purify drinking water, significantly improving the quality of life in these communities.
While the adoption of solar power is cause for celebration, there is growing concern about the environmental impact of discarded solar batteries, panels, and inverters. Proper recycling and disposal of these components are essential to prevent them from clogging rural waterways and fields.
The solar revolution in South Africa’s rural areas signifies a vital step towards energy equity and sustainability, as these churches, once left in the dark, are now shining brightly with clean, affordable, and reliable solar energy.
