Ya’cub Marar, the Director of the Directorate of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and a member of the Steering Committee of the Mediterranean Green Electrons and Molecules Network (Med-GEM), emphasized that Jordan holds significant potential for green hydrogen production through local renewable energy initiatives.
Speaking at the Jordanian-European Consultative National Workshop on Green Hydrogen, Marar expressed Jordan’s ambition to become a regional hub for the production and export of green energy, leveraging its abundant solar resources and skilled workforce.
He highlighted that renewable energy, including wind and solar power, accounted for 27 per cent of Jordan’s electricity generation in the previous year, a significant increase from 1 per cent in 2014.
Marar sees this as a prime opportunity for Jordan to take a leading role in the global shift towards clean energy, particularly in the field of green hydrogen.
He mentioned ongoing efforts by the ministry to develop policies and regulations for hydrogen, including the formulation of a national green hydrogen strategy aimed at positioning Jordan as a regional center for green hydrogen and PtX (Power to X) products.
Thiebaut Moure, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Jordan, emphasized that the transition to low carbon is not only a necessity but also an economic opportunity. He highlighted the Ministry of Energy’s collaboration with private sector developers through the signing of seven memoranda of understanding for green hydrogen and ammonia production projects.
