In a detailed report, the Philippines is urged to swiftly transition its power sector to a 1.5°C-compatible emissions pathway by replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy. The archipelagic nation, facing the frontline of global warming, grapples with rising sea levels and extreme weather events, making the shift imperative for energy infrastructure resilience.

Despite being one of the fastest-growing developing countries, with declining poverty rates and increased access to energy, fossil fuels still dominate the power sector, comprising 78% of generation in 2022. The report presents a meticulous scenario modeling for the Philippines’ power sector, offering concrete policy recommendations for a phased coal phase-out by 2035 and a substantial reduction in gas-fired generation by 2040.

Key findings emphasize the need for aligning the power sector with emission reduction targets, requiring an expedited coal phase-out and an expansion of renewable energy to 99% coverage by 2050. The report estimates abundant renewable energy potential, primarily from solar and wind sources, with a projected additional 152 TWh of renewable generation required by 2050.

Crucially, the transition to a 1.5°C pathway is deemed economically viable, reducing electricity costs and creating job opportunities. By prioritizing renewables like solar and wind, the Philippines can achieve self-sufficiency, eliminating dependency on imported fossil fuels by 2030.

The report advocates for strategic, long-term planning, recommending policy measures to strengthen ambition, incentivize investment, streamline processes, and protect biodiversity. It underscores the importance of grid planning and development for a successful transition and outlines key policy recommendations for the government, emphasizing the need for clear phase-out schedules, investments in renewable energy, and measures to de-risk investments and protect biodiversity.

In conclusion, the report asserts that the Philippines has the potential to emerge as a renewable energy leader, contributing not only to global climate goals but also fostering economic growth, job creation, and energy security.
