National Conference on Renewable Energy Charts India’s Path to Sustainable Future

Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shri R.K. Singh, inaugurated a two-day National Conference titled “Energy Transition in India – Road Travelled and Opportunities Ahead” in Gandhinagar. The event, organized as part of the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, witnessed the presence of Shri Kanubhai Desai, Minister of Energy Petrochemicals and Finance, Government of Gujarat, and numerous other dignitaries, both Indian and foreign, from the power and renewable energy sectors.

Focusing on the imperative of scaling up renewable energy generation and consumption, the conference addresses challenges related to grid integration, financing tools, and the development of supporting infrastructure. Shri R.K. Singh emphasized the ambitious vision of promoting clean energy and facilitating the energy transition, citing India’s commitment to reducing the emission intensity of its GDP by 45 percent by 2030 compared to the 2005 level. He urged developed countries to concentrate on reducing overall carbon emissions rather than scrutinizing their production sources.

Speaking to the media, Shri R.K. Singh expressed India’s goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030, with renewable energy contributing at least 50 percent of the installed capacity. Shri Kanubhai Desai highlighted Gujarat’s leadership in renewable energy, attributing it to the visionary planning of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure as Chief Minister. Gujarat boasts the highest installed wind power capacity, constituting 25 percent of the country’s total, and the highest installed rooftop solar capacity, comprising 26 percent of India’s total. The state’s proactive measures include the establishment of the first Climate Change department in the country, showcasing Gujarat’s commitment to sustainability and net-zero goals.
