A major milestone is reached as construction begins on the Culcairn Solar Farm in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, marking a significant stride in bolstering the country’s renewable energy portfolio by 25% this year. The 440 MWp (350 MW AC) solar farm, situated 45 km north of Albury on Wiradjuri country, received the green light with the issuance of a notice to proceed to construction contractor Bouygues Australia.
The project is underpinned by a Long-Term Energy Services Agreement (LTESA), secured through the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) Services as part of the NSW Government’s Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap. Expected to go live in 2026, the Culcairn Solar Farm has the potential to incorporate a 100 MW battery in the future.
Neoen, the developer of the project aims to leverage power purchase agreements for the majority of the farm’s electricity output. The solar facility is anticipated to generate sufficient energy to power 160,000 homes, contributing significantly to the regional economy by creating over 400 construction jobs and maintaining seven permanent positions upon operation.
Additionally, Neoen is committed to fostering community benefits, pledging a total of AUD 10 million over the asset’s lifetime. This includes an annual Community Benefit Fund for local initiatives and contributions to the Greater Hume Shire Council. The company’s growth trajectory aligns with its broader ambition to achieve 10 GW of capacity in Australia by 2030. Louis de Sambucy, Neoen Australia’s CEO, expressed gratitude to the teams involved, emphasizing Culcairn as a pivotal project for Neoen’s role in NSW and Australia’s energy transition. Xavier Barbaro, Neoen’s Chairman and CEO, highlighted the milestone as a testament to Neoen’s position as the fastest-growing renewable energy company in Australia, playing a crucial role in global energy transition efforts.
