GCL SI and Ocean Sun Illuminate Spain’s Waters with 270 kWp BOOST Floating Solar Project

In a significant stride towards advancing floating solar photovoltaics (FPV) technology, GCL System Integration (GCL SI) and Ocean Sun have marked their fifth year of collaboration by successfully completing the BOOST floating solar demonstrator. At the port of Tazacorte on La PaAma, the project boasts an installed capacity of 270 kWp. The BOOST project prominently features GCL MS/60GT Ocean Sun PV modules, emphasizing innovation in FPV technology.

The collaboration, which began in 2018, resulted in the development of a specialized PV module tailored for Ocean Sun’s membrane-based floating solar solution. Subjected to rigorous testing protocols jointly devised by Ocean Sun, GCL SI, and TÜV Rheinland, the modules demonstrated impeccable quality and durability. Notably, the modules underwent immersion in heated seawater under 1500V tension, ensuring their resilience in both fresh and saltwater environments.

Crafted with waterproof materials, the frameless design of the solar module reduces aluminum usage by almost 10%, enhancing affordability and durability for solar installations. The flat back surface of the module optimizes contact with the membrane, lowering operating temperatures and significantly increasing overall system power output. Benchmarking at DNV labs in Singapore further validated the superior cooling effects offered by the membrane solution, distinguishing it from ground mount systems and other floating technologies.

GCL SI’s active on-site support throughout the project, coupled with plans for additional testing in challenging marine conditions, underscores the commitment to gaining valuable insights and enhancing the module’s resilience. This successful collaboration builds upon their previous achievements, including notable installations in Magat, Philippines, and the commissioning of a significant 2 MWp FPV project at Banja dam in Albania in January 2023, reinforcing the enduring partnership between GCL SI and Ocean Sun.
