HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), delivered a keynote speech titled “Leading Projects Enhancing Sustainability” at the 9th Dubai International Project Management Forum (DIPMF). The forum, held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and organized by Dubaiโs Road and Transport Authority (RTA) in partnership with DEWA, highlighted DEWA’s pivotal role in shaping Dubai’s state-of-the-art infrastructure.
Al Tayer emphasized how Dubai’s infrastructure in electricity, water, transportation, airports, and ports, developed over decades and continually modernized, has positioned the city as the world’s best for living, working, and a global economic and trade hub.
One of the significant milestones mentioned in the speech is DEWA’s achievement of producing 614,000 tonnes of ultra-low carbon ammonia, certified by international assessor DNV. This marks the largest quantity accredited globally, aligning with DEWA’s commitment to operational excellence and supporting sustainable practices. The production of ultra-low carbon ammonia is a key component in DEWA’s efforts to drive the decarbonization of supply chains in the fertilizer industry.
Al Tayer highlighted DEWA’s notable achievements in renewable energy, including the inauguration of the largest concentrated solar power (CSP) project in the world. The fourth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, with a capacity of 950MW, is the largest investment project, featuring the world’s tallest CSP tower and the largest thermal energy storage capacity, according to Guinness World Records.
Moreover, DEWA signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) for the 1,800MW 6th phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, further expanding the Solar Park’s production capacity to 4,660MW by 2026.
Al Tayer underlined DEWA’s commitment to water security, with an investment of over AED 3.3 billion in the 180 MIGD Hassyan Phase 1 Independent Water Producer project. This solar energy-powered desalination plant is set to be the world’s largest, supporting the Dubai Integrated Water Resource Management Strategy 2030.
DEWA’s strategic shift towards clean energy is evident in its plan to produce 100% of desalinated water through a clean energy mix by 2030. The focus on reverse osmosis technology and renewable energy sources contributes to reducing emissions, environmental impact, and costs, supporting global targets for sustainable water desalination.
The CEO also highlighted DEWA’s innovation initiatives, including being the first digital organization globally, utilizing technologies like artificial intelligence, drones, blockchain, and the Internet of Things. DEWA’s digital arm, Digital DEWA, incorporates advanced digital services and features the world’s first utility-based virtual employee, Rammas, powered by ChatGPT since 2017.
Furthermore, Al Tayer mentioned DEWA’s Moro integrated data hub, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest data centre powered by solar energy. The implementation of digital twins for the energy network enhances the efficiency and sustainability of operations, contributing to DEWA’s ranking as a global leader in key performance indicators.
In conclusion, Al Tayer affirmed DEWA’s commitment to implementing sustainable projects that contribute to Dubai’s comprehensive and sustainable development, aligning with the vision and directives of the wise leadership for the happiness of citizens, residents, and visitors in Dubai.
