President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of the Republic of Uzbekistan convened with Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) President Jin Liqun at AIIB’s Headquarters in Beijing on January 24, solidifying commitments to deepen cooperation and partnerships.
In their bilateral discussions, President Mirziyoyev commended AIIB’s rapid growth and its pivotal role in the multilateral development landscape, highlighting the institution’s robust governance and adherence to international standards.
President Jin Liqun acknowledged Uzbekistan’s active contribution to AIIB’s development as a founding member and reiterated the Bank’s strategic commitment to supporting Uzbekistan’s sustainable growth trajectory.
Both leaders hailed the increased engagement witnessed in recent years and deliberated on opportunities to further bolster cooperation. They formalized a three-year investment program aimed at bolstering Uzbekistan’s development across multiple sectors throughout the country. AIIB’s portfolio in Uzbekistan currently comprises 14 projects amounting to USD 3.1 billion, ranking it as the 7th largest portfolio by member.
In a landmark decision, AIIB announced in 2023 that it would hold its 2024 Annual Meeting in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, marking the first time the institution would host its flagship event in Central Asia. During the visit, the memorandum for hosting the 2024 Annual Meeting was officially signed between AIIB and the Uzbekistan government, signifying a significant milestone in the partnership between the two entities.
