Renewable Energy Implementing Agencies (REIAs) in India, including Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. (SECI), NTPC Ltd., SJVN Ltd., and NHPC Ltd., have issued tenders for various hybrid projects aimed at integrating solar and wind power. These tenders encompass Solar-Wind Hybrid Projects, projects guaranteeing supply during peak hours, and Round the Clock (RTC) renewable power initiatives.
As of December 31, 2023, India has made significant strides in renewable energy adoption, with approximately 1.44 GW of wind-solar hybrid projects already commissioned.
The Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy and Power has announced the implementation of the National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy, effective since May 14, 2018. The primary goal of this policy is to facilitate the development of large-scale grid-connected wind-solar PV hybrid systems, promoting synergies between these renewable energy sources while minimizing land usage and transmission infrastructure.
Key highlights of the National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy include:
- Integration Guidelines: The policy outlines integration methods for both fixed-speed and variable-speed wind turbines, facilitating their connection to the grid alongside solar PV systems through specified configurations.
- Capacity Criteria: To qualify as a hybrid plant, the rated power capacity of one energy resource must constitute at least 25% of the rated capacity of the other resource.
- Retrofitting Provision: Existing wind or solar power projects are permitted to retrofit solar PV plants or WTGs respectively to leverage the benefits of hybrid projects, subject to certain conditions.
- Battery Storage Inclusion: Battery storage integration is encouraged to address output power variability, enhance energy output, and ensure firm power availability during specific periods.
- Renewable Energy Implementing Agencies such as Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. (SECI), NTPC Ltd., SJVN Ltd., and NHPC Ltd. have issued tenders for various hybrid projects, including Solar-Wind Hybrid Projects, those ensuring peak-hour supply, and Round the Clock (RTC) renewable Power. Notably, as of December 31, 2023, approximately 1.44 GW of hybrid projects have been successfully commissioned.
The implementation of the National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy marks a significant step towards achieving India’s renewable energy targets and fostering sustainable energy development.
