PowerSecure, a subsidiary of Southern Company, has announced a collaboration with Powder River Energy Corporation and the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative to develop a utility-scale solar and battery energy storage project in Moorcroft, Wyoming.
The project aims to address increasing grid-level peak demand driven by industrial growth and expanding rural electricity consumption. It is expected to enhance system reliability while reducing annual wholesale power costs for PRECorp by up to $1 million.
The hybrid installation will integrate a 5 MW battery energy storage system with a total capacity of 21.6 MWh, alongside 1.25 MWdc of ground-mounted solar generation. The combined solution is designed to improve peak load management, provide operational flexibility, and deliver backup power during outages and extreme weather conditions.
Jim Smith, President of PowerSecure, stated that the project focuses on delivering measurable value to PRECorp members by combining solar and storage technologies to strengthen reliability and manage costs while preparing the grid for future demand growth.
PRECorp CEO Brian Mills emphasized the cooperativeโs commitment to serving as a trusted energy partner, noting that the project brings together advanced technologies and industry expertise to reinforce that mission.
The project is expected to be completed within two years, with operations targeted to commence in 2027.
PowerSecure, with over two decades of experience in distributed energy infrastructure, has developed and managed more than 2 GW of microgrid capacity across the United States. The company has also implemented energy efficiency upgrades exceeding $900 million, reinforcing its position in delivering resilient and sustainable energy solutions.
