Changi Airport Group (CAG) has enlisted Keppel Ltd. (Keppel) to spearhead the design, construction, ownership, and operation of an extensive solar photovoltaic (PV) system across the terminal buildings, auxiliary structures, airfield, and cargo facilities of Changi Airport. Spanning a duration of 25 years, this initiative aims to culminate in Singapore’s largest single-site rooftop solar PV system, with an anticipated completion date set for early 2025. The system will boast a combined generation capacity of 43 Megawatt peak (MWp), with 38 MWp allocated for rooftop installations and the remaining 5 MWp dedicated to a turf area within the airport’s airfieldโa groundbreaking venture marking the airport’s inaugural foray into airfield solar installations.
Together, these rooftop and airfield solar PV systems are projected to generate enough solar energy to power over 10,000 four-room HDB flats annually, while concurrently reducing CAG’s carbon emissions by approximately 20,000 tonnes per yearโequivalent to about 10% of its 2019 consumption.
The deployment of solar PV systems within an airport setting presents unique challenges, necessitating thorough simulations to mitigate potential glare and glint effects on air traffic operations and ensuring compliance with aviation safety and security protocols. Additionally, the integration of Keppel’s Operations Nerve Centre (ONC), located within the Keppel Infrastructure@Changi building, will facilitate remote monitoring, real-time reporting of solar generation metrics, and predictive maintenance through advanced fault detection and diagnostics. Leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, the ONC will enable optimized energy management and asset performance.
Mr. Koh Ming Sue, CAG’s Executive Vice President for Engineering & Development, underscored the airport’s commitment to sustainability by embarking on initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint across various fronts, including energy-efficient upgrades and support for transitioning to cleaner energy vehicles. He expressed optimism about partnering with innovative collaborators like Keppel to further explore sustainable opportunities at Changi Airport.
Mr. Lim Yong Wei, General Manager of Keppel’s Infrastructure Division (Energy-as-a-Service), hailed the landmark solar project as a significant milestone in Changi Airport’s green transformation, reflecting Keppel’s prowess and innovation. He expressed eagerness to continue collaborating with CAG on future decarbonization and sustainability endeavors.
The aforementioned collaboration is not expected to materially impact Keppel’s net tangible assets per share or earnings per share for the current financial year
