Onyx Renewable Partners L.P., a leading provider of clean energy and decarbonization solutions, and Qcells North America, a renowned global leader in comprehensive clean energy solutions, have jointly announced their plans to develop two community solar and battery projects in Massachusetts. These projects, spearheaded by Onyx, will collectively have a capacity of 6.2 megawatts (MW), with 3.3 MW supplied by Qcells, along with 5.5 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy storage, all provided by Qcells.

These anticipated projects aim to bolster local renewable energy capacity and provide community members with access to clean energy without the need for on-site solar installations. It is estimated that the two projects will offset 3,900 tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to powering approximately 700 homes, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Onyx and Qcells are committed to setting new standards for sustainability and environmental stewardship within the ISO New England (ISO-NE) region and beyond.

The projects by Onyx and Qcells will demonstrate the effectiveness of combined solar and battery storage systems in establishing a resilient, consistent, and clean power supply. Deployed under community solar and feed-in-tariff programs and sourced from local vendors, these projects promote a responsible supply chain.

Angie Daoud, Chief Operating Officer of Onyx, emphasized the partnership’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge solar and battery storage solutions for communities. She highlighted that this collaboration solidifies Onyx’s dedication to exceeding customer expectations by delivering premier quality products and services, driven by a shared vision for a sustainable future.

Jin Han, Corporate Officer and Head of Distributed Energy at Qcells, expressed excitement about aligning with Onyx to build a sustainable future. He underscored that the partnership between Qcells’ advanced solar technology and energy storage solutions, combined with Onyx’s project development and execution expertise, will deliver reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable energy solutions benefiting consumers, businesses, and utilities alike.

The Massachusetts projects will benefit from the state’s SMART incentive program, designed to support solar power growth by providing incentives based on solar energy production. Additionally, both projects will participate in the state’s Clean Peak Energy Standard (CPS) initiative, aimed at meeting high electricity demands with clean energy to create a more sustainable and reliable power grid.

Both projects will feature Qcells’ DC-coupled battery storage technology and its end-to-end software solution, the Geli Energy Management System (EMS), optimizing battery charging and discharging to comply with program requirements for SMART and CPS while maximizing financial performance over their terms, all while delivering clean, resilient benefits to the grid.

Looking ahead, Onyx and Qcells aim to expand their partnership across the country, including projects in ISO-NE, California ISO, NYISO, and more, focusing on both solar panels and energy storage systems.
