At the prestigious Mobile World Congress 2024, Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited (HTHK) and Huawei International Company Limited have taken a significant step towards a greener future by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) focused on advancing 5.5G green strategy initiatives in Hong Kong. This partnership aims to revolutionize the telecom industry’s approach to sustainability and energy efficiency through cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and innovative green network development strategies.
Under the terms of the MoU, HTHK is set to implement an industry-leading AI-powered energy-saving solution across its 5G base stations in Hong Kong. This initiative, which targets the ambitious โzero bit, zero wattโ energy-saving goal, is designed to optimize energy usage and significantly reduce carbon emissions, contributing to the development of a sustainable telecom infrastructure.
Kenny Koo, Executive Director and CEO of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited, emphasized the company’s commitment to integrating sustainable development and climate change mitigation into their operations. โBy leveraging advanced AI energy-saving solutions and efficient antenna components, we aim to drastically lower our 5G network’s energy consumption. This not only helps in achieving significant energy savings and carbon reduction but also ensures that our customers continue to enjoy a superior experience,โ Koo stated.
Yu Yang, President of SRAN Product Line at Huawei, highlighted the collaboration’s importance in promoting sustainable development within the telecoms industry and the deployment of green networks. โWith our 30 years of experience in ICT technology, Huawei is dedicated to conducting innovative research and promoting the application of the โzero bit, zero wattโ energy-saving innovation. Our goal is to establish a stable and green 5.5G network foundation for network operators in Hong Kong and globally,โ Yang mentioned.
The partnership between HTHK and Huawei is expected to result in a reduction of approximately 400,000kg of carbon dioxide emissions annually, following the full deployment of the AI energy-saving solution at base stations. This reduction is equivalent to the flight carbon emissions of around 1,000 trips between Hong Kong and Barcelona. Moreover, the deployment of Huaweiโs MetaAAU energy-saving antenna in areas with high network traffic aims to minimize power consumption effectively, with trials showing network power consumption in sleeping mode dropping below 10 watts.
The MoU also outlines a mutual commitment to exploring energy-saving and emission-reduction solutions across mobile devices, infrastructure, and recycling, driving towards the broader goal of sustainable development in the mobile industry.
This partnership marks a significant milestone for both Hutchison Telecommunications and Huawei as they work towards transforming Hong Kong into an environmentally friendly smart city, while also setting a precedent for sustainability in the digital age. Through their collaborative efforts, HTHK and Huawei are not only enhancing the quality of telecom services but are also leading the way in sustainable business practices and the promotion of green ICT infrastructure.
